Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 review

Flip-style foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Flip 5 operate in much the same way. The flexible inner screen allows the phone to collapse from a standard smartphone size to a compact square clamshell, and the secondary outer screen lets you perform some basic tasks while the phone is folded.

This display is a 3.4-inch OLED with a pixel density of 306 PPI and a 60Hz refresh rate. This is a major change compared to the 1.9-inch cover screen on the Galaxy Z Flip 4. The Flex Window display is quite customizable, with plenty of interesting backgrounds to choose from. You can check your notifications from here and even respond to texts without having to open the phone. You can also access your quick toggle settings on the Flex Window too.

There are widgets for various functions like a calendar, weather, compass, and more. You can add and even download additional widgets, and there’s third-party support as well. Within the multi-widget view, you can see multiple widgets at once, similar to being in an app drawer.

However, you can actually get some Android apps to work on this display as well. You can enable this by toggling a setting within the Galaxy Lab settings. Then, you’ll be able to run 5 apps: YouTube, Google Maps, Netflix, Google Messages, and Samsung Messages. You can go even further if you’re willing to go through some steps, such as installing Samsung’s Good Lock app and enabling the launcher widget. This way, you can get virtually any app to work, including games. It might be a bit cumbersome to set up, and not all apps are compatible.

Design and Build

The design of the phone is quite similar to the previous model, though Samsung claims it’s more eco-friendly, made from more recycled materials. You also get sturdier Gorilla Glass Victus protection over the cover panels. There’s also IPX8-rated water protection, which guards against water ingress but not dust or sand.

The display is sharp, contrasty, and supports HDR10+ on z flip 5

The hinge has been revamped this year, reinforced by a dual rail structure for extra sturdiness. With this new hinge, the Z Flip 5 can fold flat with no gap. The foldable inner screen has undergone changes as well. It’s a 6.7-inch foldable OLED with a 1080p resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, the same as last year’s panel. However, this screen is a bit brighter this time around. The display is sharp, contrasty, and supports HDR10+.

The crease in the middle where the screen folds over is still noticeable. The fast 120Hz refresh rate smooths out movement on the screen and drops down to 24Hz when idling to save energy. The external audio is delivered by a pair of stereo speakers.

Storage

The phone can be woken up and unlocked with a fingerprint reader built into the power button. It’s fast and responsive. The Z Flip 5 comes with either 256 or 512GB of onboard storage, though neither is expandable via microSD.

One UI 5.1.1

The interface of the Z Flip 5 is Samsung's One UI 5.1.1 on top of Android 13

The interface of the phone is Samsung’s One UI 5.1.1 on top of Android 13. It’s similar to the One UI 5.1 found on regular flagships but with extra features enabled by the foldable form factor. The phone allows certain apps to split their interface into two, including a touchpad for better utilization of the two screens. This also helps with the camera app, allowing you to control the cameras while the phone is propped up to act as its own tripod. Samsung promises solid software support, with four years of OS upgrades and five years of security patches.

New Chipset

One significant development with the Z Flip 5 is the new chipset. It’s the most powerful available on Android phones right now, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy. Compared to the regular Snapdragon HN2 found in other flagships, this one has a slightly higher CPU clock speed. There’s more power under the hood here than in the previous generation, and the phone uses more advanced memory tech with UFS 4.0 storage and LPDDR5X RAM.
